Stakes were high as the Lady Pilots travelled to play the rival Grace College Lancers for a Tuesday night matchup on Feb. 14. Both teams came in with the chance to grab the #2 seed in the MCC post-season tournament. After three straight losses, the Lady Pilots were eager for a win.  All of these storylines made for a great game as Bethel pulled out a clutch 73-68 win. The Lady Pilots started strong – hitting their first four three-point shots. The success continued throughout the first half, as Bethel shot an astounding 63 percent from the floor including 8 of 9 from behind the arc. Despite all the fireworks, Bethel only held a 33-24 lead at halftime due to an equally astounding 17 first-half turnovers. Laura Johnson did her part in the first half, leading the Lady Pilots with 12 points on four three-pointers. The second half started in nearly the same fashion as the first – Bethel draining threes. Three consecutive long-range shots gave the Lady Pilots a 45-28 lead early in the second half. But the Lancers would not go away. Despite being down 60-45 with less than five minutes remaining, full court pressure coupled with some of their own three-point shooting put Grace right back in the mix. The final minutes were frantic. The Lancers’ had quick hands on defense throughout the game and were continuing to force the Lady Pilots into sloppy mistakes. Twice in the final 20 seconds, Bethel’s lead was cut to four points. However, seven clutch free throws down the stretch gave the Lady Pilots the victory. Despite being outrebounded 32-25, outscored in the post 22-8, and being forced into a whopping 27 turnovers, Bethel’s stellar shooting was the difference. The Lady Pilots shot 46.3 percent from the field as well as 66.7 percent from beyond the arc. The win gives the Lady Pilots a 20-8 record on the year as well as 12-5 in the MCC. They also clinched the #2 seed in the upcoming MCC post-season tournament. Up next, the Lady Pilots will travel to Indianapolis to play the Marian University Knights at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18.
