The Bethel College men's soccer team is back on a hot streak after winning two home games at the Waterford Estates Classic. With a no. 24 NAIA ranking heading into the weekend, big things were expected from the Pilots and they did not disappoint. The first test was against the Bellevue University Bruins on Friday, Sept. 14 at Morey Field. Both teams played even with each other throughout the game; the Pilots had the slight edge in total shots (19-14), and both teams had five corner kicks. In the end, this made for a 2-1 Bethel victory with goals coming from senior Eduardo Fernandez and sophomore Tim Wilson. The team then had to quickly prepare for a match against the University of Saint Francis Illinois at 7 pm on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Pilots and the Fighting Saints set a physical tone early in the game which would continue throughout. Amid the rough play, the Pilots gained momentum in the first half with two goals from senior Daniel Moyo – who leads the Pilots with four goals this season. The momentum wouldn’t shift the rest of the game. Bethel dominated by outshooting Saint Francis 22-8. The Fighting Saints would put one goal in the back of the net during the second half which cut the Bethel lead to one goal. But that is as close as Saint Francis would get. The Pilots cushioned their lead with one more goal late in the second half from sophomore Lucas Dos Santos and came out on top by a score of 3-1. The wins pushed the Pilots' record to 5-1-1 and has them looking to move up in the standings when the new NAIA rankings are revealed on Tuesday. Next, the University of Northwestern Ohio comes to Mishawaka to play the Pilots at 7 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 19.
