Not very many people have dominated on both ends of the court like Von Gilbert, who comes in at no. 10 on our list of the greatest Bethel basketball players of all time.
Von Gilbert was dominant on both ends of the court from 1992-1996.
Von Gilbert was dominant on both ends of the court from 1992-1996.
He had an intimidating presence at the rim both on offense and defense. He is twelfth on the all-time scoring list with 1,766 career points. He also holds the school record for blocks in a career with 245 - 48 more than second place. He is fourth all-time in career rebounds with 1,258. He affected the game in about every way possible. He is the only player in Bethel history to record at least 1,700 points, 1,000 rebounds, 400 assists, 250 steals and 200 blocks in a career. Gilbert was definitely a winner. He was a key component on the 1995 team which won Bethel's first ever NAIA National Championship. That year, he was named to the NAIA All-Tournament team. He also was a member of the 1993 NCCAA National Championship team. He finished his career with 132 wins, which is tied for ninth all-time. His 36 career double-doubles rank third all-time in school history, however those stats are only complete since the 1994-95 season - halfway through Gilbert's career. Just this season, Gilbert was inducted into the Dr. Al Beutler Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments. Gilbert finished tied for seventh in our Twitter voting held over the last month, which moved him into the Top Ten along with career statistics and experts' opinion.   The top ten was created by combining expert picks, statistics, championships and awards won, as well as the voting on Twitter. Some players may have been rated high by experts but did not receive as many votes as others. Others may have received votes but their statistics did not matchup against others. The top ten is comprised of the ten players who scored the best across all categories. To see the voting, visit the #BethelPilotTop10 page on the Beacon's homepage.
