Classes cancelled as Bethel braces for blizzard

All Bethel classes scheduled after 5 pm for traditional, non-traditional and graduate students have been cancelled for Tuesday, Feb. 1 Bethel College President Steve Cramer released the following statement late this afternoon. "We will monitor the situation through the evening and early morning and make a decision about the college opening on Wednesday, Feb 2 when the full effect of the storm is known. But we will endeavor to make such a decision as early as is feasible. Please check the designated media outlets and college websites for weather related closing information" The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for the entire region. The city of  South Bend has  declared a snow clearance emergency, meaning no parking will be allowed on major streets in the northern Indiana city. Mayor Stephen Luecke says the emergency will go into effect 6 p.m. Tuesday and last until 8 a.m. Thursday. Luecke is urging people to drive carefully. He also says people who don't have to be on the roads should not drive after the storm starts, but says he doesn't expect to declare a snow emergency mandating that people stay off roads.
