The men's basketball team hosted Bethel College's annual "Tip-Off Madness" Oct. 25 in Goodman Gym. The vintage gym was packed and bursting with energy as students cheered the men’s basketball team into the start of a new season. The 2010/2011 men’s basketball team was introduced with much fanfare. Players showed off their basketball prowess and impressed the crowd with a dunking and 3-point shooting contest. Head Coach Mike Lightfoot gave an optimistic speech on the up and coming season. Students enjoyed several fun games and had the opportunity to receive free t-shirts as well as Hacienda chips and salsa. In addition, give-a-ways from Chili’s, Chick-fil-a, and Sonic were available to students. Freshman Travis Patterson had the chance to win $10,000 in a basketball-shooting contest. Regrettably, he was not able to cash in on this prize. One of the biggest highlights of the night was the annual mattress race between Oakwood/Slater Hall and Manges Hall. Oakwood with their winning legacy placed Bill Bemis, Resident Director of Oakwood, on a mattress while Manges carried its Resident Director Travis Beam. In the past Oakwood has dominated this contest and this night was no exception. In the first race, Oakwood easily beat Manges. For the second race Josh Hartsell, Resident Assistant of Oakwood, replaced Bemis and was carried to victory once again by the freshmen boys of Oakwood. The Pilots take on their first regular season opponent Indiana University-South Bend Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. at home.
