The Pilot men’s basketball team was unable to continue their four game winning streak that extended back to the Miami Gardens Classic Tuesday night, Jan. 11  as they fell on the road to Marian University by a score of 80-68. Marian came out strong against the Pilots as they claimed a quick 24-13 lead by the ten minute mark in the first half. Although the Pilots did make a short run, the Knights finished the half on an 8-0 run which gave them a 39-28 lead. The second half was a similar story for the Pilots as they were only outscored by one point but were unable to chip away at the growing lead. The Pilots did show off their depth through balanced scoring. They had an impressive 28 points off the bench, which included Steve Ward scoring 11 points in 17 minutes. Caleb Laideg and Ryan Benner were the only two starters to put up double digit scoring as Laideg collected 11 and Benner had 10. Joe Welch also made a significant contribution on the night as he had eight points and grabbed seven rebounds. Previously, the Pilots had collected three continuous conference games which put them at 3-3 in the conference. They defeated both Goshen and Spring Arbor on the road, while they knocked off an impressive Huntington team at home. Nevertheless this tough loss to the Knights puts Bethel at sixth in the conference and at an overall record of 13-8. The Pilots will now take this weekend off and not compete again until next Tuesday when they host the Taylor Trojans at 7:00 p.m. With only nine regular season conference games left and five of those being at home, the Pilots will look to finish the second half of the season strong and put themselves in a position to be a dangerous conference tournament team.
