The 2011 men’s and women’s track seasons began last weekend at Grand Valley State, as both teams experienced a commanding start to the season. Throughout the meet, both teams combined to meeting three NAIA qualifying times and 60 NCCAA qualifying times. The Pilots have no doubt been gearing for this first meet for a while now and they have already begun to see some of their goals achieved. The women’s team was led by some outstanding performers and they also claimed all three of the NAIA qualifying times. Those meeting the mark were Irene Kangai in the 400 meter, Avante Newsome Gunn in the long jump, and the 4X400 meter relay team consisting of Kangai, Beene Capre, Sam Etter, and Kaila Stevens. Leading the way for the men’s team was JW Maierle, who finished second in the long jump, while Calon Boyd placed fourth in the event. The Pilots were also led by their 4X400 meter team which placed fifth in the meet and consisted of Boyd, Robby Burns, Aaron Patrick, and Talal Maree. Both track teams will be heading back to Grand Valley State next Friday as well.
