MISHAWAKA—As of this past month, Bethel’s staff welcomed a new athletic trainer, Doug Cassell.

Cassell will be the athletic trainer for Rugby, Women’s Soccer, Women’s Basketball, and Baseball. With around 20 sports teams and close to 400 athletes at Bethel, Cassell is a much-needed addition to the staff.

Cassell said, “The opportunity to come to Bethel literally fell into my lap. I was looking for a new opportunity and so I posted my interest on Facebook. Shortly after posting, I was contacted by a staff member from St. Joseph Hospital about Bethel.

“I had played against Bethel for years and knew about their rich traditions and how competitive their teams are, and I knew that was something I wanted to be a part of. I could not pass up the chance to be a part of not only a quality institution, but a great athletic program.”

Cassell has been an athletic trainer for 20 years. He received his bachelor’s in Athletic Training from the University of Charlston, W.Va., and his master’s in Secondary Education from Marshall University.

Cassell said his interest in becoming an athletic trainer goes back to high school.

" I was never much of an athlete but loved to be involved with the teams,” he said. “My athletic director saw my interest and sent me to an athletic training camp where I learned some basic skills, and I was hooked.”

Fun fact: Cassell is in the Purdue Northwest Athletic Hall of Fame for his services as an athletic trainer to Purdue North Central.
