Coldplay’s new album Mylo Xyloto

As a chronic Coldplay listener and huge fan of the band’s musical pursuits I rank their latest album Mylo Xyloto as some of their best work to date. The band’s album is a musical expression of the early New York City graffiti scene and historic resistance movements. Behind the lyrical symbolism, Mylo Xyloto offers classic Coldplay ballads while exploring new musical avenues.

On tracks like “Up in Flames” and “Us Against the World.” Coldplay lights up your ears with soaring acoustic ballads that are reminiscent of the band’s acoustically heavy tracks in their third album X & Y. “Up in Flames” is a personal favorite from Coldplay’s new album. The song starts with simple and heart felt piano and then slowly develops into an effortless melodic masterpiece. The band explores a new sound on tracks that would not sound out of place on the dance floor. Songs like “Princess of China” featuring Rihanna, “Major Minus,” and “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” feature new musical territory for the band. Coldplay’s musical explorations are sure to please listeners with upbeat foot stomping rhythms mixed with Lead Singer Chris Martin’s signature falsetto vocals. “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” the band’s first single, features full upbeat heavy synths.  The band’s second single “Paradise” is a love song that starts with soothing strings, which are quickly highjacked by the full band and fat crunchy guitar work. Mylo Xyloto accomplishes being musically and lyrically reflective and upbeat while exploring new musical avenues. In this new album Coldplay establishes a distinct refreshing sound while staying true to its previously successful musical roots.
