Pilots squeak by Cougars, begin MCC play 1-0

On Nov. 22, the men’s basketball team traveled to Spring Arbor and squeaked by the Cougars 76-74 in their MCC opener. Spring Arbor has been a difficult place for the Pilots to play the last several years; nevertheless, Bethel has been clutch so far this season as they have now won four games by three points or less. Overall, the entire night was a battle between to evenly talented MCC foes. After the first 20 minutes, the Pilots were deadlocked with Spring Arbor 36-36. From there, neither team was able to make a run and pull away in the second half. With just seconds remaining, Bethel had a two point lead with Landon Booker at the free throw line. After missing the first, he purposely missed the second which did not allow the Cougars to set up an inbound play. Jordan Bowerman was a strong force for the Pilots as he collected 15 points and five boards. Cody Cochran also played well as a starter, contributing 15 points as well. Matt Schauss continued to prove his sharpshooting, going 6-10 from the field and scoring 14. In addition, the Pilots continued to win the turnover battle, forcing a total of 19 and giving up just 10. Booker led the defensive charge, as he earned four steals on the night. The Pilots’ next game will be Nov. 30, when they play Goshen for their MCC home opener. Goshen is currently 1-0 in the conference after an impressive three-point win over Taylor.
