The men’s soccer team opened up MCC play last Saturday, as they traveled all the way to Mount Vernon Nazarene to collect a key 1-0 overtime decision. Due to the large five hour driving distance between the two schools, the Pilots traveled to Mount Vernon Friday night so that they would be able to prepare for the game both mentally and physically. The game started off with tough defense on both sides, as many games have this season for the Pilots. Due to their superb experienced defense, they were able to hold a 0-0 tie at halftime. In addition, a Cougar player received a red card with less than three minutes to go in the half which would put Bethel a man up the rest of the way. Although the team was unable to capitalize in the second half, their go-ahead goal came in the second period of overtime as Romolo Nobrega headed in a ball from Luke Davis. After the goal Nobrega collected a yellow card for excessive celebration which was his second one of the day giving him a red card. Nevertheless, the Pilots were victorious and jumped out to an early 1-0 MCC record. The Pilots will have another difficult conference road test this Wednesday as they travel to Upland, to take on the Taylor Trojans. The game is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
