The Evangelicals for Dreamers gathering is taking place on Bethel’s campus Monday, February 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Everest-Rohrer chapel. It is an event that supports DACA (The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students. Bethel was presented with this opportunity to co-host by Rev. Heather Ghormley, Tree of Life Anglican Church and Immigration Legal-Aid Clinic.
nbsp; The idea behind the event is to gather the evangelicals in the area to give them Scripture and statistics, as well as to hear from fellow immigrant students and their journeys. The future of the DACA program is up in the air right now, and the group hopes to be able to come alongside them and support them in a Christ-like manner.
As Redgina Hill of Bethel’s office for diversity and inclusion puts it, “(It’s) a time of gathering, learning, and praying on what Christ would advise us to do.” Hill is the point person and Bethel representative for this event, introducing the event with a welcome and a brief message on why this is important. “We are not telling Congress what to do, that you need to be on this side or that side, but that we support the need for Congress to do something,” said Hill. “But at the same time finding out what we need to do to help our neighbors.” “It is our job to love, to share the love of God,” Hill said of the event's relation to the people in the DACA program, “to have empathy, for whatever reason that they are here…What did Jesus do? During his time the people who were thought as the ‘stranger’ he deeply loved and cared.” Hill said that she hopes that attendees learn more about how the process works and that they become more aware of the students on campus who are part of the DACA program.
