MISHAWAKA - Bethel University’s Intramurals and Wellness Departments co-hosted a Jiu-Jitsu event as a part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Nick Geever, resident director and director of Intramurals, and Courtney Chapman, Wellness Program coordinator, planned and organized the event.

Geever said, “Courtney has had monthly events for wellness and to do new things and meet new people, hobbies, practice wellness. We thought this would be a good opportunity to offer self-defense.”

Geever also said he personally does Jiu-Jitsu, in a discipline called Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, which he said is less sport-oriented and more focused on self-defense.

They brought in McGuinn Jiu-Jitsu from South Bend to teach a seminar with some basic self-defense moves in Goodman Gym on Monday, April 18, at 8 p.m. Geever said about 35 people showed up for the event.

Geever also said, “This is an awesome opportunity to meet new people, keep your body engaged, and get your mind focused on things. It is both humbling and empowering. It’s a unique opportunity to get plugged in and allow students to see a snapshot of that.”
